On Mars a couple hundred years in the future, permanent settlements have been established by private companies. Aram, the domed city where the story takes place, was founded and is run by Aximm, a rare earth mineral mining company. The main character, Aki, lives outside the city, where perchlorate farmers convert the perchlorates in the soil into oxygen, which is then piped to Aram. Aki's adoptive dad, Kenzo, suffocates when their oxygen supply is cut off, so Aki is forced to leave their home and vows to get revenge on Aximm.
